Critical Incident Leadership

This Track IV course will develop and greatly improve your critical decision-making skills. In other words, this course will teach you how to think and make quality decisions in chaos. Peace officers and dispatchers of all ranks, tenure, and assignment are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Description

Critical Incident Leadership is a 24 hour professional development course presented over three consecutive days.

This Critical Incident Leadership course develops and improves a student’s critical decision-making skills.  In other words, this course teaches students how to think in chaos.

The course utilizes direct instruction, facilitated discussion, and small group exercises to develop principles, strategies, and cognitive thinking skills which then may be applied to any number and types of incidents the student may encounter during their career.

Critical Incident Leadership develops students’ abilities to apply specific proven principles, many of which were outlined by legendary SWAT commander Sid Heal in his books Sound Doctrine and Field Command.  Students apply the principles learned to actual critical incident scenarios through realistic decision-making exercises based upon lessons learned and best practices.  Students will be given a framework to manage any critical incident prior to the arrival of SWAT or additional resources.  Students will learn the skills and principles to effectively navigate the types of incidents they may encounter in their careers.  Law enforcement's role in mitigating the risks to the public and officers, as well as appropriate confrontation of suspects and subjects will be explored.  The principles taught in the course are consistent with widely accepted best practices for de-escalation and management of critical incidents.

All commission personnel and dispatchers of all ranks, tenure, and assignment, from new hires to the chief executive, will benefit from this course.

Each student will receive a class workbook for notes and exercises specifically designed for students to demonstrate understanding of concepts presented.
